Where can I find digital sales charts?

After losing the No. 1 spot last week, T.I. snatches his throne back this week on Billboard’s ‘Top Rap Albums Chart’. Paper Trail shelved off 78,300 discs this week, pushing the album’s total sales to 1,522,100 copies.

Ludacris moves one spot up to No. 2. Theatre Of The Mind shifts 58,300 units this week. After 6 weeks on the chart, the album has sold 439,100 copies.

T.I.’s “Whatever You Like” Destined for Popularity Thanks to Economic Crisis

December 17, 2008 · Leave a Comment

#1 for a reason

#1 for a reason

Found this pretty interesting. Apparently T.I. represents the free market with “Whatever You Like.” As a result of the success of songs like “Whatever You Like” T.I. went on to sell over 500,000 physical copies of Paper Trail within a week of the albums release.

Though many listeners may only scratch the surface of the song and view it as a lusty, playful approach to grabbing a lover, Pettijohn argues that the popularity of the song is based off people’s desires to have more when in reality they have less than before. Ann Powers, a writer for the L.A. Times, predicted this same result a few months ago in a column about the chart-topping single. “Why would a song about insane levels of affluence entrance pop fans as economic crisis hits?” she asks. “Maybe the answer to that is obvious: We want escape.”

Continuing her comparison, she takes the example of the music video that accompanies the song. Describing the way the girl in the video day dreams about spending time with T.I., it subsequently ends with her having a $100 bill rather than the chance of a lifetime.

“In this scenario, T.I. doesn’t simply play a sugar daddy – he’s the free market itself, enticing a hopeful girl with a little cash and a lot of delicious talk. The money melting in her hand at the video’s end represents the shrinking value of crazy deals in which so many have indulged.” Full story by Edwin Ortiz

T.I. is Headed to Prison and Paper Trail Debuts #1

The King

The King

Wow! T.I. sold over 500,000 copies of Paper Trail the first week!

I’m from Florida so you know I’ve known about T.I. for a long time. I’ve enjoyed following his career and have no doubt that he’ll be back stronger than ever after serving his sentence. I’m glad he got a taste of his hardwork before heading to the human cages.  You can read about T.I. heading to prison for a year in this article in USA Today.

T.I. may be staring at a year in prison, but he’s not letting that curb his swagger. The Atlanta rapper’s new album, Paper Trail, finds him chastened but unbowed after pleading guilty this spring to federal weapons charges.

Rather than use this opportunity to bemoan his fate, he owns up to his mistakes, takes haters to task and declares the ordeal will make him stronger. He does it with his usual lyrical flair, which already has helped him score three hit singles in the run-up to today’s release.

I was looking back on old posts about T.I. on Hiptics. The one post that really stood out was one I made when T.I.’s record-breaking single “Whatever You Like” was released. When I first heard this song I knew it was going to be a hit, and it made me that much more confident that T.I.’s legal woes would only fuel Tip to create a classic album. According to Paper Trail reviews, T.I. came close (what do you think?).

The Guns that are sending T.I. to Prison

The Guns that are sending T.I. to Prison

I watched T.I. have to serve time while his career was on the up-swing with a series of popular singles like “24s,” “Rubberband Man,” and “Let’s Get Away.” There was no guarantee he would be able to pick his career back up but he did. T.I. came home and released Urban Legend . Suddenly T.I.’s claiming himself to be “King of the South” didn’t seem so far fetched. Remember what the next album was called? King.

Keep your head up T.I. and keep doing positive things!

T.I.’s New Album Paper Trail REVIEW

September 23, 2008 · 4 Comments

King is Back

King is Back

The album begins appropriately with the lyrical dexterity of “56 Bars (Intro).” With regal authority, TIP dissects then dismisses his less talented naysayers without ever having to call out a name. Reunited with the producer that’s crafted his biggest hits, DJ Toomp’s pulsing bass lines fit perfectly with the Bankhead star’s cocksure demeanor; setting a good start for the disc.

That focus continues on their second album collaboration “I’m Illy.” Again in battle mode, T.I. juxtaposes his achievements with a thinly veiled, local Atlanta rapper who aspires to the king’s throne in mind.

For the first time, TIP addresses in detail the events that lead to his gun prosecution on “Ready For Whatever.” Over Drumma Boy’s urgent but sprawling synths, T.I. makes a compelling argument for his need for weapons, explaining the murder of his best friend before his eyes despite the six figures he already pays for security. What makes the track work so well is that TIP is brave enough to leave his Rap persona at the door and reveal the fear that fueled his rash decisions. Full Review at AllHipHop

Paper Trail for sale on September 30

Paper Trail for sale on September 30

When four of the best rappers in the world come together like this we get to see fireworks and hear our some of our favorite rappers on one track.

On Friday, the gods of hip-hop seemed to bless all of the fans of the genre with the leak of a new song that features the four biggest names in the hip-hop game. The leaked single, which will be on T.I.’s upcoming album, Paper Trail, is called “Swagger Like Us.” It features Tip, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Jay-Z.

And while the song, which is reportedly brilliant, seems to be divine for fans, it is a nightmare for T.I.

The reason, along with the reason why so many artists are angered by the theft of their albums and singles, is because T.I. doesn’t make any money off of the new song.

The Atlanta rapper, one day after the fact, would like to know who leaked the song which will likely be the first single off of T.I.’s album, which is scheduled to be released on September 30.

“That’s some bullsh–,” Tip told MTV News Saturday afternoon on the

phone. “I’m beating down the Internet as we speak.”
